Experience

Hi! My name is Katy. I hold a master’s degree in Architectural History from the University of Virginia and a bachelor’s degree in History and Music Performance from the College of William and Mary (magna cum laude). As an historian, I have worked with the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, the White House Historical Association, and the National Parks Service. As an oboist, I’ve performed with the Charlottesville Symphony, William and Mary Orchestra, Greater Boston Youth Symphony, and Massachusetts All-State Music Festival. I enjoy teaching and working with students in subjects ranging from history, to social studies, to writing, to instrumental music instruction and music theory. I have extensive experience in study skills and time management, as well as adolescent psychology, serving as a Big Sister mentor to a junior high-school student through the University of Virginia’s Young Women Leaders Program. I believe that a positive educational experience is one step towards empowering young men and women as they seek to gain a better understanding of themselves and their decision making. I can certainly relate to those students who seek to balance academic learning along with a love of extracurricular activities—whether those activities are musical, athletic, theatrical, or scientific. I hope to help students reach their greatest scholastic potential while recognizing that the activities that students are passionate about say a great deal about who they are as individuals. Good study skills, time management, and a mastery of the material can go a long way towards a fulfilling academic experience.
